This chapter in the second edition of Mountain Medicine and Technical Rescue applies established human-factors concepts to SAR and introduces non-technical skills affecting team performance. Its central proposition is that human factors must be embedded into normal operational activity.
Examines a three-week mountain search involving more than 2,500 participants, dogs, drones and aircraft. Search-theory calculations and mapped effort were used to examine coverage and support the eventual transition from search activity to police investigation.
The College replaced the previous Missing Persons APP following a review. The revision spans initial contact, risk assessment, investigation, partnership working, governance, support services and specific-investigation appendices.
A timed exercise with 70 SAR practitioners found broad agreement on basic concepts but inconsistencies in subject profiling, location terms and map annotation. Most favoured reassessing assumptions and high-probability areas before expanding the search.
